#BLPMUSE | JENAHARA NASUTION ON BEING A FASHION DESIGNER AND KEEPING HER ROOTS

In this special month of togetherness, we talked with our #BLPMuse Jenahara Nasution. Read on to know her story!

Meet Jenahara Nasution, the founder and creative director of JENAHARA who is also a mother of three. Being passionate about fashion, she inherited that from her mother and grandmother. Let’s read on as she shared with us more about her family and inspirations here!

Hi Jehan! How did you become a designer?

My mom is also a designer. When I was a kid, I used to follow her around doing her job – from selecting fabrics to doing fashion shows. That’s how I fell in love with fashion and felt that being a designer is my calling. Fun fact, my grandmother used to be a tailor too, so I guess it’s been a part of my roots!

What is the inspiration behind your design?

I’ve worn hijab since I was 13 years old, so growing up I’ve seen a lot of hijab fashion trends. Back then the trend was leaning towards one set of outfit and hijab or maybe flowery pattern, but I like something minimalist and simple instead. I think wearing hijab should be something effortless and fuss-free – and that’s what’s been the foundation of JENAHARA’s designs.

Other than that, music also inspired me a lot in creating my designs. It comes naturally since I’m born in a family of musicians.

For JENAHARA’s newest Raya collection, I gave it the theme of“Back to Roots” with Ulos pattern in every design. The idea is about coming back to my own roots and honoring my heritage. Because Raya isn’t just a celebration – it’s a way to reconnect with our family, traditions, and the cultural roots that define us.

Other than working on JENAHARA, you’re also a mom. How do you balance these two?

I always tell my children about my day. I think it’s important, so they can get an idea of what I’m doing when I’m not at home. I also love to spend quality time with them. We usually share each other’s day just like what friends do. I truly cherish those moments even if the time is short.

What value do you want to pass on to your children?

Be yourself. Because when you are authentic to yourself, you’re going to bring out good energy that creates positivity to others. Also to never be afraid to stand up for what you believe in.

What’s your go-to makeup?

I like to keep it natural for everyday, but I never skip using a blush and wearing something to brighten my eyes’ area. That’s why Compact Powder, Moon Blush Saturn Return, Eyeshadow Pen Harvest Gold, and Lip Petals Cedar are my favorites.
