#BLPIRL SHIBORI SOIREE

After a two-year absence due to the pandemic, #BLPIRL finally came back! This time around we invited #BLPFam to Shibori Soiree in collaboration with local naturally dyed goods brand, Binzu.

On a fine, slightly gloomy Saturday morning, we opened the doors of #BLPHQ to 15 #BLPFam for the first session. We felt giddy like meeting our best friends after talking for some time online!

The first session was opened by #BLPTeam Freesca and Sarah, continued by a welcoming speech by Lizzie Parra. Some familiar faces looked so excited to create their own shibori pattern! Bintang, the founder of Binzu began by explaining what shibori means. Originated in Japan, it is a manual resist dyeing technique, where we can create our own patterns using different techniques. You can fold it (Itajime), tie it to create spider web patterns (kumo), use marbles or simply wrap the fabric in abstract shapes.

#BLPFam was given their own fabric with various props such as marbles, rubber band and wooden blocks to fold and create their own pattern. There is no right or wrong when it comes to shibori, as each motif is beautiful on its own – just like #BLPFam!

After the fabric was folded, it was dyed using a natural dye called indigo. The process only took around 5 - 10 minutes for the beautiful blue shades to come out. You could dye it once to get softer shades of blue, or dip it two or three times to achieve darker shades of blue. While waiting for the color to seep into the fabric, #BLPFam joined a fun quiz. A lucky winner could bring home a set of #BLPBeauty shades!

Then came the moment we have all been waiting for: the pattern reveal! Each #BLPFam unfolded their fabric and got to finally see the end result. No two patterns were the same, and when all fabrics were displayed, they formed an aesthetically pleasing backdrop.

As the first session came to an end, the second session of #BLPFam followed the same agenda – only they experimented even further by combining different shibori techniques in one fabric! It was raining and gloomy, but nothing could stop us from having fun.

All good things come to an end, they say, so we had to say goodbye to #BLPFam. Each brought home their shibori creation, and a goodie bag filled with sanitizer from Klarens, voucher from Kopi Konnichiwa and In Season Out Of Season, dessert from Omi Dessert, with cute accessories from MoDni and Perky Plan. Thank you beloved friends, we couldn’t do this without you!
